User Groups

User Groups allow the system adminstrator to specify sets of news groups to limit which users can access particular groups. Two default groups are created, "Default read" and "Default post", which are initially defined to cover all existing groups (both are specified as "*"). The system administrator may create additional groups and may modify the definition of the default groups. Note that users who do not login, use the default groups. This allows the system administrator to limit access to news groups for non-logged in users to a select set of groups.

Screen shot of user groups windows

In the example shown in the screen shot above, a user group that permits access to everything except groups starting with "microsoft." and and group containing the characters "sex" has been created. All registered authorized users who are students could then have this "Students" user group specified as their read and post user group.

By using the "!" (negation or NOT), and the "Permit" and "Exclude" buttons, one can create equivalent descriptions. However, the system administrator may find it more convenient to list either the groups permitted, or the groups excluded to a set of users.
